Polonnaruwa Medieval Kingdom

Polonnaruwa succeeded Anuradhapura as Sri Lanka's medieval capital following the Chola invasion in 1070 AD, flourishing as a golden age of Sinhalese culture, architecture, and irrigation under the visionary rule of King Parakramabahu the Great (1153–1186 AD). Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa is widely celebrated for its remarkably compact, well-preserved archaeological park, where monumental royal palaces, circular relic houses, and rock-carved sanctuaries sit peacefully within shaded forest parklands.

King Parakramabahu famously declared that 'not a single drop of water falling from the sky should flow into the sea without being made useful to man.' Under his rule, ancient engineers constructed the colossal Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama), a vast man-made reservoir covering 2,500 hectares that still irrigates the surrounding rice paddies today. The ruins of his seven-story Royal Palace (Vejayanta Pasada) still showcase thick brick walls, structural beam sockets, and the royal audience hall adorned with elephant relief friezes.

The crowning artistic triumph of Polonnaruwa is the legendary Gal Vihara (Rock Monastery). Here, four colossal Buddha statues—including a 7-meter standing figure, two seated meditation figures, and a monumental 14-meter reclining Buddha depicting the final attainment of Nirvana (Parinirvana)—are masterfully sculpted directly into a single granite rock outcrop. The subtle facial expressions, graceful posture, and intricate drapery of the robes make Gal Vihara one of the finest masterpieces of Asian rock art. Other must-see highlights include the Polonnaruwa Vatadage (an ornate circular relic shrine), the Rankoth Vehera stupa, and the Lankathilaka image house with its towering 17-meter brick walls.
