Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park, spanning 8,889 hectares in Sri Lanka's North Central dry zone, is globally famous for hosting one of nature's greatest wildlife spectacles: 'The Elephant Gathering.' Listed by Lonely Planet and National Geographic as one of the 'Top 10 Wildlife Spectacles of the World,' this extraordinary phenomenon occurs annually during the dry season between July and October, when hundreds of wild Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) migrate from across the Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee forests to the banks of the ancient Minneriya Tank.

Built by the great King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD, the vast Minneriya reservoir retains water long after surrounding forest streams have dried up. As the lake water slowly recedes under the summer sun, it exposes rich, nutrient-dense fresh green grasses along the vast lakebed. Up to 200 to 350 wild elephants gather simultaneously in open view to graze, socialise, play, mate, and bathe. Visitors seated in open-top 4x4 safari jeeps can witness matriarchs guiding tiny newborn calves, energetic young bulls playfully locking trunks in mock battles, and massive herds grazing peacefully just meters away.

Beyond its world-famous elephant population, Minneriya's mixed evergreen forest and scrublands provide sanctuary for a diverse variety of wildlife. Safari drives frequently spot spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boars, grey langurs, toque macaques, and occasional elusive leopards or sloth bears. The vast reservoir is also an avian paradise, drawing huge colonies of fish-eating birds like painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, Asian openbills, white-bellied sea eagles, and colorful kingfishers that feed in the nutrient-rich shallows.
